Net-Zero Carbon by 2040: Our Journey and Commitment to the Paris Agreement
Our Commitment
The Climate Pledge
NDB is proud to be a signatory of The Climate Pledge, committing to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2040—ten years ahead of the Paris Climate Agreement.
As a Climate Pledge signatory since 2024, we commit to three key actions: regular greenhouse gas emissions measurement and reporting, implementation of decarbonization strategies aligned with the Paris Agreement, and neutralization of remaining emissions through credible offsets.
This report documents our baseline position, decarbonization roadmap, and progress toward our 2040 net-zero target. Our current emissions footprint is minimal, and we are establishing the framework that will guide us as we scale operations.
Framework
Three Pillars of The Climate Pledge
Regular Reporting
Measure and report greenhouse gas emissions regularly with full transparency and accountability.
Our Approach:
- • Annual GHG inventory (Scopes 1, 2, 3)
- • Transparent public reporting
- • Third-party verification (from 2027)
- • Alignment with GHG Protocol standards
Carbon Elimination
Implement decarbonization strategies in line with the Paris Agreement through business change and innovations.
Our Approach:
- • 100% renewable energy from Day 1
- • Circular economy manufacturing
- • Supplier decarbonization programs
- • Efficiency improvements & waste reduction
Credible Offsets
Neutralize any remaining emissions with additional, quantifiable, tangible, permanent, and socially beneficial offsets.
Our Approach:
- • High-quality carbon removal credits
- • Nature-based solutions (reforestation)
- • Direct air capture investments
- • Transparent offset portfolio disclosure
Baseline Year
2024 Carbon Footprint
Our 2024 emissions baseline is limited to office operations, business travel, and R&D activities.
Minimal direct emissions from office heating/cooling (rented space).
Purchased electricity for office operations (estimated based on average grid intensity).
Business travel, employee commuting, purchased goods & services, R&D equipment (estimated; full inventory in progress).
Total 2024 Baseline: ~19 tons CO₂e
This baseline will serve as our reference point as we scale operations. While our current footprint is minimal, we recognize that manufacturing operations (target launch 2030) will significantly increase our emissions profile.
Note: 2024 figures are estimates based on operational activity and industry benchmarks. We commit to completing a comprehensive GHG inventory using the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard by Q2 2025, with third-party verification from 2027 onward.
Pathway to Net-Zero
Our Decarbonization Roadmap
A phased approach to eliminating carbon emissions across our entire value chain by 2040.
Pre-Operational
Foundation & Planning
Emissions Reductions:
- Transition to 100% renewable electricity for offices
- Implement sustainable business travel policy
- Remote work policy to reduce commuting emissions
Planning Activities:
- Complete comprehensive Scope 3 mapping
- Design carbon-neutral manufacturing facility
- Develop supplier engagement and decarbonization program
Facility Development
Infrastructure Build-Out
Key Actions:
- Build first manufacturing facility with 100% renewable energy
- Implement closed-loop water systems (95% recycling)
- Zero-waste-to-landfill manufacturing design
- Electric vehicle fleet for logistics
Targets:
- Scope 1+2 emissions intensity: <10 kg CO₂e per unit produced
- Achieve carbon-neutral operations from Day 1 (Scopes 1+2)
Scale & Optimize
Supply Chain Decarbonization
Key Actions:
- Engage top 80% suppliers (by emissions) in decarbonization
- Transition to low-carbon logistics (sea/rail over air)
- Optimize product design for material efficiency
Targets:
- 50% reduction in Scope 3 emissions intensity
- 80% of suppliers commit to science-based targets
Net-Zero Target
Final Mile to Net-Zero
Key Actions:
- Eliminate all remaining Scope 1 and 2 emissions
- Achieve 90% absolute reduction in Scope 3 emissions
- High-quality carbon removal for residual emissions
2040 Net-Zero Achievement:
- Net-zero carbon across all scopes (1, 2, 3)
- Climate Pledge commitment fulfilled
- Third-party verified and publicly reported
Positive Impact
Our Products as Climate Solutions
While we work to eliminate our operational emissions, our products themselves are climate solutions that enable massive CO₂ avoidance globally.
Annual CO₂e Avoidance by 2034
By replacing lithium-ion batteries and fossil fuel-based power sources, NDB batteries will avoid an estimated 2.4 million tons of CO₂e emissions annually by 2034. This is equivalent to removing ~520,000 cars from the road each year.
How Our Technology Reduces Carbon
Eliminating Battery Replacement
Long-life batteries eliminate manufacturing and disposal emissions from billions of traditional batteries
Displacing Fossil Fuels
Off-grid power solutions replace diesel generators and other carbon-intensive energy sources
Recycling Nuclear Waste
Repurposing radioactive materials prevents environmental harm and creates value from waste
Accountability
Governance & Transparent Reporting
Climate Oversight
Our Sustainability Committee, chaired by the CEO, oversees all climate-related matters and reports to the Board of Directors quarterly.
- Quarterly review of emissions performance vs. targets
- Annual Board-level review of climate strategy and risks
- Executive compensation linked to ESG performance (from 2027)
Reporting Standards
- GHG Protocol Corporate Standard (Scopes 1, 2, 3)
- Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi) commitment (planned 2025)
- Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) alignment
- Third-party verification from 2027 (limited assurance)
Progress Tracking
We will report progress annually through this Climate Pledge Progress Report, with key milestones tracked and publicly disclosed.
"The climate crisis demands bold action. We are committed to not only decarbonizing our operations but also accelerating the global transition to clean energy through our breakthrough technology."
— NDB Climate Team, December 2024
