About this position

NDB is seeking a Nuclear Fuel & Safety Engineer to lead the development of safe nuclear fuel configurations and comprehensive safety systems for our nano diamond battery technology. This combined role focuses on nuclear fuel design, radiation shielding, and safety analysis for micro-scale nuclear power systems. You will design nuclear fuel configurations optimized for energy output and safety, develop radiation shielding and containment strategies, conduct safety analyses and risk assessments, and ensure compliance with nuclear safety regulations. This role is critical to achieving regulatory approval and ensuring safe commercial deployment. This is a unique opportunity to work on next-generation nuclear technology in a safety-critical role. You'll collaborate with nuclear engineers, physicists, and regulatory experts to create the safest possible nuclear battery technology.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Nuclear Engineering, Health Physics, or related field
  • 5+ years of experience in nuclear fuel design or nuclear safety engineering
  • Strong background in radiation shielding design and dose calculations
  • Experience with nuclear safety analysis methods (FMEA, PRA, fault tree analysis)
  • Knowledge of NRC safety regulations (10 CFR) and ALARA principles
  • Proficiency with shielding design codes (MCNP, MicroShield, QAD, or similar)
  • Excellent technical writing skills for safety documentation
  • U.S. citizenship or ability to obtain security clearances (preferred)

Responsibilities

  • Design nuclear fuel configurations for micro-scale power systems
  • Develop radiation shielding strategies and containment solutions
  • Conduct dose calculations and radiation safety assessments
  • Perform safety analyses (failure mode analysis, risk assessment, hazard analysis)
  • Ensure compliance with NRC, ALARA, and radiation safety standards
  • Design safety features and emergency response protocols
  • Collaborate with nuclear engineers on fuel/battery integration and testing
  • Prepare safety documentation for regulatory submissions and licensing

Preferred Qualifications

  • Health Physics certification (CHP) or Nuclear Engineering Professional Engineer (PE) license
  • Experience with radioisotope power systems (RTGs) or nuclear battery technology
  • Background in nuclear fuel cycle or spent fuel management
  • Familiarity with transportation safety (DOT regulations for radioactive materials)
  • Experience working with NRC licensing processes
  • Knowledge of international nuclear safety standards (IAEA)
