About this position
NDB seeks a Patent Research & IP Documentation Intern to support intellectual property research, patent analysis, and IP documentation for our nano diamond battery technology. This internship provides hands-on experience with patent research, prior art searches, competitive IP analysis, and innovation documentation. You will assist with patent landscape research and analysis, conduct prior art searches and patentability assessments, help document inventions and innovations, and support patent application preparation. This position offers exposure to intellectual property management, patent law, and technology innovation documentation. This is an excellent opportunity for students interested in intellectual property, patent law, or technology transfer to gain practical experience. You'll help protect breakthrough nuclear battery technology while developing valuable IP research skills.
Requirements
- Currently pursuing Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering, Science, or related technical field
- Completed coursework in relevant technical area (nuclear, materials, electrical engineering)
- Strong academic record (3.0+ GPA preferred)
- Excellent research and analytical skills
- Strong technical writing and documentation abilities
- Attention to detail and thoroughness in research
- Ability to understand complex technical concepts
- Interest in intellectual property and patent law
Responsibilities
- Conduct patent searches using patent databases (Google Patents, Espacenet, USPTO)
- Perform prior art searches and competitive patent analysis
- Research patent landscape in nuclear battery and energy storage technologies
- Assist with invention disclosure documentation and review
- Help prepare patent application materials and technical drawings
- Analyze competitor patents and freedom-to-operate considerations
- Maintain organized IP documentation and filing systems
- Prepare summaries of patent research findings and recommendations
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior internship or research experience in technical field
- Familiarity with patent databases and search tools (PatSnap, Orbit, etc.)
- Background in nuclear engineering, materials science, or semiconductor technology
- Experience with technical writing or documentation
- Interest in pursuing patent agent registration or IP law career
- Availability for 3-6 month internship commitment
